Talented Turangga Farm breds Champagne Cuddles and The Virginian showed their class at Randwick on Saturday when placing in Group events and giving promise of better things to come.
Three year-old Not a Single Doubt filly Champagne Cuddles was an easy winner at her first two starts and was tackling stakes class for the first time in the Group II ATC Silver Shadow Stakes.
The Bjorn Baker trained filly acquitted herself well against a small but select field, finding the line well for Tye Angland to grab third in the 1200 metre sprint behind Formality and Alizee.
“She went really good. The winner just had a nice time up in front and ran home in good time, but she attacked the line good late,” said Angland.
Placed in the Group I BRC Stradbroke Handicap as a three year-old, Hinchinbrook gelding The Virginian was transferred to the stable of Brett Cavanough following a successful Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign for Toby Edmonds that saw him win a Listed race at Doomben.
The Virginian tried hard when going down by a half a neck to Deploy in the Group III ATC Show County Stakes over 1200 metres.
The race was run in course record time of 1:08.06, so one can only think The Virginian is in for a fruitful spring campaign.
“Great run, first run for the big man (Brett Cavanough) so he's obviously sharpened him up a bit and it was a big run,” said his rider Glyn Schofield.
